How To Smoke A Cigar | Got Something In Your Mouth?
Cigars are unlike anything else and they differ in the way you need, treat, and smoke them like pipes and cigarettes. You need to know how to hold your cigar properly and understand what not to do as you prepare to smoke it. The point of smoking a cigar is to get a mouthful of cool smoke filled with flavor. A lot of misconceptions arise especially if you’re used to smoking cigarettes like myself. Newbies tend to overheat the cigar which prevents them from getting the full flavors, thus, you miss the whole point of savoring the tobacco experience. To avoid these common mistakes, I’ve come up with some very useful tips in case you need help on how to smoke a cigar.
1. Holding A Cigar
Don’t hold a cigar like you’re holding a cigarette. The proper way to hold a cigar is to rest it on your middle finger and wrap your index finger around it. It’s easy to tell if a person is new to smoking cigars just by looking at the way he’s holding it. You gotta have that swagger when holding a cigar.
2. Should you take off the Band?
It’s a personal choice if you want to take off the band of the cigar. If you do want to take it off, I advise not to remove it immediately. Let the heat of the cigar loosen the adhesive to make it real easy to remove the band and stave off ruining the cigar.
3. How to Light a Cigar
There are a few different tools you can use to light a cigar such as wooden matches, cedar matches, and butane lighters. Cedar matches give you a little bit more time to light your cigar and it smells better than regular matches. First off you need to moisten the head of the cigar to prevent it from sticking to your mouth. Once the head is moistened, hold the cigar horizontally and slowly rotate it while lighting until you see a red glow. Then bring it to your mouth and puff lightly.
4. Smoking the Cigar
Are you supposed to inhale the smoke? The answer is no! The high alkaline content and low amount of nicotine will make you cough. You’re going to enjoy the taste and flavor of the cigar without having to inhale it like smoking a cigarette.
5. How long should it take to smoke?
The duration of smoking depends on the length of the cigar. A smaller one like a Corona may take 30 minutes while a longer cigar could take an hour or more. What’s important is you don’t heat up the cigar too much by smoking it too quickly which will ruin the taste. So take your time and light it up for later if need be.
6. Tapping the Ashes
Don’t tap the cigar to remove the ash too often. A long ash means your cigar is well rolled but it will go out if you leave it sitting for too long which is fine ’cause you can simply light it up again. But don’t tap it like a cigarette to remove the ash instead hold it up against the ashtray and rotate it for the ash to fall off.
