Men and chick flicks–no matter how you put these two together, they just don’t mix well.

There’s a long list of films men love to watch. Mystery, sci-fi, suspense; those that involve high-speed chases or grueling twisted plots. Unfortunately for men, they can’t always watch what interest them while on a date. You have to put your best foot forward, right? And if that means enduring one and a half hour of Channing Tatum’s abs for your girl, heck you’ll do it. But let’s be honest here, there are certain chick flicks we wish would not take any part on our date night.

Chick Flicks Men Can’t Stand To Watch On A Date

Some say that chick flicks are to relationships as porn is to sex. You might think it is an extreme comparison, but truthfully, It’s on point. Porn gives an exaggerated take on sex, just like chick flicks often present an overly embellished kind of relationship that most men can’t keep up with. It’s emotional porn and most men don’t want to be subjected to that.

Here’s a list of chick flicks most men can’t stand watching on a date.

Bridget Jones’ Diary

This film gives the classic chick flick categorization for men – the good guy and the asshole. The not-so-confident damsel in distress’ main conflict here is who to choose between the two. While the film tries to empower women to embrace their quirks and love their selves, it doesn’t give much justice to the guy characters. For the guys, you’re either gonna be the asshole that breaks her heart or the good guy who will mend her from pieces. It’s not the worst movie but it’s just added pressure for men to watch, especially with the girl they’re trying to win over.

Sex and The City Movie

This film depicts the highs and lows of middle-aged women living in New York City, but being forced to watch this movie is only a low for most men. Apparently, the way to empower women in this chick flick, and other chick flicks for that matter, is to present men as one-dimensional characters.

Mama Mia!

It must be the Abba music or Pierce Brosnan’s awkward musical moments, but something about this movie makes it painful to watch especially for James Bond fans. And while I agree musicals are masterpieces, too much singing, and female estrogen, at times, can be off-putting.

Twilight

Vampires that sparkle; need I say more? But to make things worse, the film glorifies the idea of stalking too. As long as you look like Robert Pattinson, apparently it’s fine. The cheesy lines and Kristen Stewart’s awkward acting doesn’t help either.

Pretty Woman

The quintessential of all chick flicks, in my opinion, is Pretty Woman. It’s a Disney Fairytale in a hooker’s outfit. And while Julia Roberts is quite charming in this film, it is not enough for men to want to watch it. It sets too much expectation of what romance should be, which includes lavish things and a prince charming on a limousine.

Fifty Shades of Grey

The latest addition to the list of chick flicks men can’t stand watching is Fifty Shades of Grey. To set an insane standard for what dating and romance should be is one thing, but to do the same thing with sex and intimacy is beyond words. Now how can a normal guy compare to that? Seriously?

Here’s a video, from Watch Mojo, for other chick flicks men hate:

Chick flicks may not be a man’s cup of tea, but it doesn’t mean one doesn’t have the capacity to be romantic and cheesy in real life if they refuse to watch them. Looking at the list of chick flicks included here, the common reason for men’s aversion is not actually the amount of mushy stuff but the way it gives false hopes and exaggerated standards that are far from what is real. If you can’t stand to watch chick flicks, politely tell her how you feel instead of looking like a tortured soul, or worse, falling asleep.

For women who plan to suggest these chick flicks to their man come movie night, please give your guy a break and save it for ladies’ night instead.
